May 7, 2007: Letter to Seattle City Council regarding the Mobility Plan proposal

To: Seattle City Council
From: Linnea Hirst, Transportation Committee Chair,

Date: May 7, 2007

The League applauds your proposed Mobility Plan legislation for a number of reasons:

  • It addresses mobility for freight and people with a variety of possible transportation solutions, rather than speaking in terms of vehicle capacity.
  • It addresses the need for the Alaskan Way Viaduct project to be consistent with Seattle's land use, economic, and environmental goals.
  • It seeks to expand public open space in the downtown core.
  • It seeks to expedite transportation capital projects that will help reduce carbon emissions and will help improve mobility before, during and after Viaduct-related construction projects.

We note that the Mobility Plan legislation directs SDOT to work in collaboration with WSDOT and King County to develop the Urban Mobility Plan. We ask that you also invite Sound Transit to work on this Plan so there is coordination between development of Sound Transit's long-range plans and the development of the Urban Mobility Plan.

Thank you.
