September 11, 2006: Letter to Seattle City Council and Mayor Greg Nickels, re Viaduct decision

To: Nick Licata, President Seattle City Council
From: Nancy Eitreim, President LWV of Seattle
Date: September 11, 2006

Dear President Nick Licata,

The League of Women Voters of Seattle urges the Seattle City Council to make the decision as to whether to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a cut-and-cover tunnel or a surface street replacement.

One of the guiding principles of the League of Women Voters is our belief in representative government. It is our position that the Council is responsible for review and adoption of a capital improvement program, using adequate staff for study and research and giving careful consideration to community needs, to the setting of community goals, and to long-range planning to achieve the desired ends.

We support measures to ensure communications between city officials, local governmental entities and the public so as to bring city government closer to the people and make it more responsive to their needs. The City of Seattle and Washington State Department of Transportation have both held many public events in order to explain the proposed alternatives and to get public feedback on those alternatives.

We now ask that you make the decision.

Sincerely,

Nancy Eitreim, President
League of Women Voters of Seattle
